Resonator Guitar Lovers Online
Just had back surgery which rules out sitting in straight-back chair or playing standing with strap. I know there are lap steel stands but is there one made just for resonator guitars? Not much of a DIY kinda person, so I’m looking to purchase complete set up. Apologies if this has been covered before, I’m new to the forum. Thanks
I'm guessing you may already be aware of the Asher lap steel stand.
Bill took over the product a few years ago from Mark Roeder who was retiring, he made the stands under his Deluxe 34 label.
I have an Asher stand, it's a beautiful piece of work. I bought it during the transition and I believe mine was made by Mark Roeder because it shipped from his address in the Midwest even the ordered it from Asher.
Check out the link below - in the spiel Bill wrote that the current stand may not work for a dobro, but there is a special bracket that is in production. No clue how long ago he wrote that so the obvious thing to do would be to contact him or his wife Jessica. The Ashers are great people and I'm sure they can fill you in.
Good luck in the search and hopefully you'll find a good solution to keep you pickin' - and if the modified bracket is available you'll love the Asher stand. It's the best thing out there for the job.
It will be great if it works out that Asher has the bracket ready.
You can also check out The Steel Guitar Forum and do a search for stands. Guys on there use everything from folding keyboard stands, to walkers and ironing boards. Regarding the latter two, I've razzed them in the past by saying "I hope you don't play out somewhere using an ironing board or a walker - unless you're okay with looking like a dork!" And there are also guys on the Forum who are DIY types and have come up with some good solutions.
Since you have a Beard R Mahogany then you know quality, and with inflation that guitar now sells for $4500. That being the case then you probably think like I do - "you only cry once when you pay for quality." So purchasing an Asher stand wouldn't be big time sticker shock. If you play an el cheapo Rogue reso from Musician's Friend that would be a different story.
I bought a Deluxe 34 stand off of Mark Roeder with the Dobro bracket for an 8 string Beard Gold Tone and it’s a great stand! I got a different bracket from him a little later that works with a couple lap steels that I have. This happened right before Bill Asher took over with building them. I would bet that the new Asher stand has an option for the Dobro bracket. You’ll want the one that has 4 legs.
