Anyone looking for a truly different up-market reso, check out gadgie.co.uk
Absolutely stunning, made from solid aluminum welded and finished in a variety of colors and styles. I tried the bright Blue one at a festival, the soundholes are in the shape of 2 geckos. The colored finish was fantastic.
Great sound, and you can get them in hollow squareneck or roundneck with biscuit or spider cones. I have no connection with the maker, in fact, he wouldn't let me have one as an endorsement deal.
Innovative designs, dontcha think ?

Those look very interesting. I've asked for prices as well through the web site.

Dobro made a 'fiddle edge' aluminum guitar in the 30's. I had the cance to buy one but it sounded really dead. Aluminum is not ,known for being a resonant material. Just my two cents.

Aluminum is actually very very resonant and musical. Look at wind chimes, xylophones, RESO CONES, SPIDER BRIDGES, and Rickenbacker Fry Pans.................

I think only a couple/few metals surpass aluminum in tone, maybe brass, bronze, and silver.

I guess this would be worth $.03??? LOL

Then it could have been the guitar. It really was dead sounding. It was in 1979 and I had the chance to buy a Style O or the Dobro and after playing them, I went for the Style O, which I still have. It could be that the body was too thick and didn't allow enough resonance but I've never really heard anything good about those Dobros. M33? I think they were called. Had a cross where the sound holes are.

I have heard the same thing about those old aluminum dobros.
I have only seen pictures of them but from the way they look they look sort of soft and thin.

There are a million different (alloys) mixtures of what is all called aluminum. Some aluminum can be soft and dead sounding.

I haven't heard any response after a week.

Okay... One thing I do remember was that it was really, really light. One of the reasons I chose the style O is because at that time I like to have heavy guitars. I know stupid, but I was young. I was also collecting printing presses and Indian Motorcycles; I just liked heavy, greasy junk. The Style O is the only thing left from those days of romping around with my ass hanging out. It was fun though!
